Thank you for visiting our website which includes the churches of St Osmund, Breightmet and St Teresa’s Little Lever, Bolton.

For those who are not able to attend mass at this time please use the daily readings from the Universalis website to listen to the word of God.

Father Heakin’s sermon is available to listen to from 5.30pm every Saturday to coincide with the Sunday Vigil Mass.

You can join in the daily celebration of mass at churches in England, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales on Church services TV and live streamed masses at Walsingham and Lourdes. There are also radio stations where you can listen to music, prayer and podcasts.

What An Experience!

A group of 16 of us from the Bolton community successfully completed this year’s Sahara Desert fundraising challenge in aid of the Bolton Hospice. So far the group has raised over £37,000 and with help from parishioners, family and friends, I was able to bring in just over £2500 of that!

It was 2 full days and 2 half days trekking through the Sahara Desert, guided by local Berbers and a lead from Different Travel which coordinates the actual hike in Morocco on behalf of the Hospice.

It was tough terrain and two days it heated up to 37 Celcius but all the preparation done by the Hospice team, our practice hikes over the past months and the advice from Different Travel meant we were prepared and able. The night skies were spectacular and we had a lot of fun during the trip to balance it all out.

It was absolutely wonderful and I’d recommend it as a great undertaking if anyone is interested. The Hospice holds it every year.

228,855 children living in poverty across Salford Diocese*

Today, we are calling for urgent action, following new figures which show almost a quarter of a million children in the Diocese living in poverty. Our charity, which is launching its Summer Appeal by sharing the shocking extent of child poverty in each of the local authority areas covered by the geography of the Diocese of Salford, is urging Government to take immediate action.

Our charity operates a diverse range of services across Greater Manchester and Lancashire, including professional services for children. Our latest fundraising appeal is asking for support to enable us to reach and support more families.

As we go through the most severe period of price rises for 40 years, we know that more local families than ever will need our help, especially across these school holiday weeks and into the autumn with the planned energy price hike.

It is simply not right that children are suffering, and these latest figures of the numbers living in poverty in our area are frankly shocking.

Demand for our services is higher than ever, and it’s heartbreaking and completely unacceptable that families are having to choose between paying bills or feeding their children. Action must be taken now.

*We are grateful for the research carried out by Loughborough University on behalf of the End Child Poverty Coalition and published earlier this month.

We are calling for the Government to support people’s immediate spending needs by:

  • Increasing benefits now (as opposed to April 2023) to bring them in line with inflation
  • Reintroducing the £20 uplift for Universal Credit
  • Providing a one-off payment to households in dwellings below EPC band C
  • Implementing policy that helps mitigate the impact of inflationary shocks in the future.

Caritas Salford continuing to support people in crisis in practical ways

Since its launch in 2020, the Caritas Bishop’s Fund has been awarding small one-off emergency grants to families and individuals in crisis. Access to these grants is promoted via Caritas frontline workers and partnership organisations, as well as the diocesan network of schools and parishes.

The fund has helped people in many different ways, ranging from supermarket shopping vouchers through to replacement white goods and children’s beds. It has helped hundreds of people when they have been at their lowest points in their lives (terminal illness, loss of job, bereavement, eviction, survivors of abuse).

St Alphonsus

In these difficult times when our worlds can seem to be upside down and the familiar patterns of life are removed from us, we turn to God and rely on his mercy and loving compassion for us all.

Below is a Prayer of St Alphonsus which we use when Mass cannot be celebrated publicly. Some will find it helpful to have a space as a focus for their prayer. This might include a crucifix, icon or other holy image, and a lighted candle.

Spiritual Communion

“My Jesus, I believe that you are present in this Holy Sacrament of the altar. I love you above all things and I passionately desire to receive you into my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally; come spiritually into my soul so that I may unite myself wholly to you now and forever. Amen.”

Alphonsus Liguori was an Italian Catholic bishop, spiritual writer, scholastic philosopher and theologian, and founder of the Redemptorists, an influential religious congregation. He was canonized in 1839 and proclaimed a Doctor of the Church in 1871. Saint Alphonsus declared prayer to be “the most necessary defense against our enemies.”

The hymn ‘O Bread of Heaven’ about the Eucharist was written by St Alphonsus Liguori and translated into English by Edmund Vaughan (1827-1908). This is a hymn many will remember from their First Holy Communion.

About Blessed Dominic Barberi C.P.

Dominic Barberi (22 June 1792 – 27 August 1849) was an Italian theologian and a member of the Passionist Congregation prominent in spreading Catholicism in England. He contributed to the conversion of John Henry Newman. In 1963, he was beatified by Pope Paul VI.
